8M0186195 is the current Mercury/MerCruiser replacement for multiple earlier MAP sensor numbers, depending on engine and application. Historical OEM numbers include 861249, 861249A1 (earlier EFI/MPI applications) and 881731 (8.1L/496 generation). These predecessor numbers do not share a single linear chain — their historical lineage is application-specific.
This is a MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor — it measures pressure only. Do not confuse with the MAPT sensor (885165 / 8M0087834) used in ECM-555 applications, which combines pressure and temperature sensing in a single unit.
Historical OEM lineage is application-specific. 861249 / 861249A1 applies to the earlier EFI/MPI branch (4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L EFI; 7.4L L29 MPI). 881731 applies to the 8.1L/496 generation. An intermediate number 8M0054726 also supersedes to 8M0186195 on later 8.1L/496 applications — this intermediate step is not represented in the compatibility table but is noted here for reference.
8M0186195 is the current Mercury/MerCruiser MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor replacement for a range of earlier EFI and MPI engine applications. Different engine generations carried different historical OEM numbers before superseding to the current 8M0186195.
For earlier EFI/MPI applications — including the 4.3L EFI, 5.0L EFI, 5.7L EFI, 7.4L MPI L29, and 7.4L MPI MIE L29 families — the historical MAP sensor number is 861249A1 (and its predecessor 861249). For the 8.1L MIE and 496 Mag generation, the historical number is 881731.
A MAP sensor reports intake-manifold absolute pressure information to the engine control module (ECM). The ECM uses this signal as one input when determining engine load, operating conditions, and fuel/ignition strategy. This sensor measures pressure only — it does not measure temperature.
MAP-related symptoms can overlap with vacuum leaks, wiring faults, connector problems, fuel-delivery problems, and other engine-management faults. Symptoms alone do not establish a failed MAP sensor. Proper diagnosis using the appropriate service documentation is required before replacing this component.
Fitment must be determined by engine model, application, and serial number — not by historical OEM number alone. The convergence of multiple historical numbers on 8M0186195 does not imply that all historical applications are interchangeable. Verify your exact engine model, serial number, and existing OEM part number against the application table before ordering.
This MAP sensor applies to the 4.3L EFI, 5.0L EFI, 5.7L EFI, 7.4L MPI L29, 7.4L MPI MIE L29, 496 Mag, and 8.1L MIE engine families. It is NOT the correct sensor for 454 MAG MPI / 502 Magnum MPI (those use 864856A1), and NOT the correct sensor for ECM-555 applications (those use MAPT 885165 / 8M0087834). Verify your exact engine model, serial number, and existing OEM part number before ordering.
Aftermarket cross-reference: Sierra 18-7660 (aftermarket — not a Mercury/MerCruiser OEM number). Verify fitment independently before ordering any aftermarket part.
